“The best is yet to come”

Welcome to the web site of Paddy Joe Burke, Roscommon Age Friendly Ambassador and retired barber.

On Tuesday , 22 Oct, 2024, Paddy Joe hung up his scissors after 52 years entertaining every soul that walked in the door. Many a visitor would call in to for a cut but just as many called in for a bit of Paddy Joe talk. Football was never far from the day´s agenda but any topic was open for discussion.

Everyone that walks by the door wishes he was still there, but the Four Mile House native gave more than his fair share to Roscommon and even has a record that will last almost 1,000 years, having been the first person to score a Goal in the Hyde in the 21st Century.

Only recently Paddy Joe completed another one of his great dreams…

Paddy Joe was appointed as the Roscommon Age Friendly Ambassador in May 2024. Joining a very illustrious list, which included the late Moya Brennan (Clannad) representing Donegal; TV personality Francis Brennan representing Kerry and stage and TV actress, perhaps best known for her in Glenroe and Fair City, Geraldine Plunkett.

Societal views on ageing are evolving rapidly and positively, outlined 31 Age Friendly Ireland Ambassadors from the worlds of entertainment, sports, journalism, and business today (23 May). These ambassadors — including prominent figures such as former Irish hotelier and television personality Francis Brennan and actress Geraldine Plunkett —  gathered at Slane Castle for the inaugural Age Friendly Ambassadors’ Day, an annual awareness initiative launched by Age Friendly Ireland to champion positive ageing.
